Laser Surgery

Laser surgery has been used in human medicine for years, and is extremely popular in the veterinary industry as well. At Cardinal Animal Hospital, we realize that laser surgery has many impressive key benefits compared to a surgical scalpel.

Benefits of Laser Surgery:

  • Decreased pain
  • Reduced risk of infection (sterilization of the soft tissue)
  • Reduced blood loss (cauterization of blood vessels)
  • Faster healing
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Less tissue trauma
  • Minimal swelling of the surgical area
  • Smaller, more precise incisions

Some minor surgical procedures with the laser can even be done using local anesthetics versus general anesthesia. It is also important to note that lasers can be more easily managed and more precise that a cut with a blade, so your pet may even have reduced time under general anesthesia.

Common Laser Surgical Procedures:

  • Ovariohysterectomy (spay)
  • Castration (neuter)
  • Soft tissue surgery
  • Cat declawing
  • Ear surgeries
  • Eyelid surgeries

Laser Declawing

Laser declawing offers many advantages over the traditional declawing procedure. For starters, laser declawing is less painful, causes less bleeding, and leads to very little swelling. Cats declawed through laser surgery recover faster and don’t need to have their toes bandaged after surgery. Because the surgery is easier on them, they are also less likely to engage in licking and other behaviors that sometimes occur after regular declawing.

Surgical procedures may be scheduled by appointment, Monday through Friday. It is very important to withhold food and water before your pet’s scheduled surgical procedure. We will give specific instructions on how to properly prepare your pet for surgery.
